Yahoo! opens up some more

Some great new resources are now available, courtesy of everyone’s favorite web 2.0 company: Yahoo!

The Design Pattern Library contains a whole bunch of patters for user interface designers to use and abuse. Martijn van Welie finally has some competition.

Of more interest to developers is the UI Library, containing “a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications”. These code examples are frequently linked to from the pattern library.

I must say, these look like some excellent additions to the current body of knowledge available to designers and developers. Thanks a bunch Yahoo!

However, my paranoid mind can’t help but think: what’s the catch?

Welcome to the new site!

Well, the move is complete. I’ve moved my blog over to my own domain. It was lying around doing nothing, so I may as well put it to use.

This blog uses WordPress 2 as it’s CMS. It was a breeze to import all the Blogger posts. Nice one, WP team!

I’ve forwarded all the RSS feeds to Feedburner, so if you’ve subscribed to that feed (which means you’re reading this), you won’t have to change anything.

To-do:

  • Create a new theme (now running the pretty “Almost Spring” by Becca)
  • Pull in my Flickr photo’s
  • Pull in my del.icio.us links (done!)
  • Create an about page
  • Create an archive page
  • Figure out the IA for this site – to tag or not to tag?
  • Categorize or tag all my old posts (not looking forward to that)

Trying out new web apps

I’m giving Rojo a spin right now.

I transfered all my feeds from Bloglines yesterday and, after an initial feeling that the app was bloated, I must say I quite like it. The tagging is well-implemented, and for some reason I feel I can scan my new stories much faster here than in Bloglines. The only glaring ommission is a notifier!

I’ve also signed up for 30 Boxes, and have been playing with the really cool natural language event input system. Once you get used to the forced AM / PM syntax, it’s quite nice. The only thing I’m missing here is a way to import an iCal export (.ics).

Euro IA Summit 2005 report

While my notes are collecting dust on my hard drive, someone else finally got around to writing up a report of last year’s European IA Summit. As James Kalbach writes in his article on Boxes and Arrows:

“We should be intensely interested in documenting these summits… Does IA really want to deliver a wheelbarrow of PowerPoint slides in ten years as the body of its work?”
