Posts like this make me think Matt Webb would make a kick-ass game designer. Solid explanation of reinforcement strategies. The best one is variable-interval, yes, but also positive — rewards work better than punishment. Any dog owner knows this.

Skarped’s presentation at the NLGD Festival of Games was easily one of the most interesting. This interview gives a good sense of her thinking, but sadly no impression of her award winning game.

Apart from confusing things by making a counterintuitive distinction between experience design and game design, this is a good example of how mechanics and ‘dressing’ interact in games.

A lot of folks think of game design as including the experience design — but then there’s no name for the discipline of creating gameplay, which is quite independent of experience design.
So I tend to use game design to reference the construction of game systems, and experience design to cover creating an experience using the game design as one element.
Ah but I can agree with that definition Raph. From your post I thought you were arguing that game design and experience design are completely separate. Seeing it as a part-whole relationship is I think much more productive than putting them in some form of a dichotomy. Thanks for dropping my and commenting again.
