Dog-walking video (by Jhoosier42)

Thanks to Tricia for pointing me to this one. A dog-walking game which employs both a treadmill and an instrumented leash. From the look of it, dog walking has never been this hard or tiring. I can imagine a game like this fulfilling a real need in the large cities of Japan (there’s cat cafes too, after all). Some more thoughts on the coevolution of man and domesticated animals such as cats and dogs can be found in this article from which the video was taken.

Nobody Beats the Drum – Natural Thing (by nobodybeatsthedrum)

Been neglecting the animal theme a bit. Was reminded to keep paying attention by Iskander (thanks!) This clip is like an alternate take on Pig Chase. I particularly like how the animals escape from their box at the end of the video.

I should mention these guys have a reputation for going a bit crazy on their videos. Have a look at this making of, for example.

You’re going to have people saying, “What, plants know when I’m chewing on them? I’m not going to chew them anymore. I’ve got nothing left to eat!

Interesting piece in this week’s Groene on John Berger’s book Why Look at Animals. The quote refers to the seemingly contradictory attitude farmers have to their animals: they appreciate them for the live beings they are as well as for the product they become. Something I can relate to, despite being an urbanite who according to Berger can’t really understand.

Just posting this because I linked to it in the previous post but the imagery is just too wonderful not to include.

“A device to wrestle with the STRONGEST ANIMAL IN THE WORLD: the rhinoceros beetle. This device includes a head-and-body mounted display that equips humans with the appendages required to interact (with the males at least). In addition it scales us and our forces to the beetle proportions granting us similar manipulative capacities and even playing field; an architecture of reciprocity.” (via Chris Woebken I Beetle Wrestler)

Was pointed to this by Ianus. Alexandra tweets:

“So far it seems this year’s #SXSW key launch has been an app you play with your cat. Maybe now is the time to let Lindon and Berlin shine.”

So yeah, a marketing game about cat food. Ho hum. It’s a shame there’s not much more going on here beyond slapping at a screen as fast as possible.

The piece also mentions “Friskies hailed the game as the world’s first ever duel-species game.” Not true. I won’t talk about Pig Chase, ‘cause that’s not a playable game yet. But there’s plenty of prior art. My favorite: Beetle Wrestler (2008), by Chris Woebken, Natalie Jeremijenko, Lee Von Kraus and Leigha Dennis.

More animal weirdness. Not exactly sure what this means but the image of a pig with parts missing, as if it’s partially eaten but still alive is strangely alluring. I also find the llama-like cows disturbingly cute.
